Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM) - Work Package 5

The Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM) is a public University established in Ancona (Italy) in 1971. It has a clear scientific and technological focus and is very active and performant in the European R&D&I. Particularly, sustainable water services and management are the core expertise of the Water and Waste Environmental Engineering Lab (WWEELab)  research team at the Department of Science and Engineering of Materials, Environment and Urban Planning (SIMAU), which manages several EU-funded R&D&I projects and technical consulting activities (https://www.univpm.it/Entra/Engine/RAServeFile.php/f/P012789/Curriculum/1639668943118.pdf).

UNIVPM is the lead of Work Package 5 (WP5 - Risk management tool & guidance for decision making) of WATERUN project. WP5 aims at developing a new methodology for stormwater management, which is based on a risk-based approach. Particulalry, a decision making platform based on a mapping tool will be created for water quality and risk analysis provision in selected urban districts of the cities of Santiago De Compostela (Spain) and Aarhus (Danmark). Furthermore, predictive tools such as an “Early Warning System” for a safe stormwater reuse and management, and a risk-based tool for Water Sensitive Urban Design will be elaborated and based on the calculation of the quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) and the quantitative chemical risk assessment (QCRA).

Reuse of stormwater is increasingly seen as a potential option for meeting water demands in water stressed regions. However, one of the potential reasons for the limited exploitation of urban stormwater as a substitution water source is the lack of understanding of the pollutants’ occurrences in the urban aquatic environment, and its associated environmental and public health risks. In this context, WP5 will exploit all the innovations and results produced in WATERUN, including the development of innovative techniques for pollution detection, monitoring and modelling, which will costitute the background information for the execution of the risk assessment that will support stakolders in the decision process. Hence, an innovative methodology to contribute to the implementation of urban water runoff (UWR) management plans in cities will be established according to a holistic perspective (from source identification to decision making).
