The role of VIAQUA in the integrated management of the water cycle in Galicia - Work Package 4

VIAQUA is a Galician company in the environmental sector that manages the integral water cycle processes, basing its model on service excellence, experience and generation of added value. Their commitment to the search for solutions to the climate crisis is reflected in their participation in innovation and research projects that seek to improve the efficiency of the integral water cycle through optimal management of water and sanitation resources.

In addition, VIAQUA works hand in hand with its research technology centre CETAQUA to achieve innovative goals within the integrated management of the urban water cycle. This allows them to address the necessary changes to solve the water crisis with an innovative, circular and sustainable perspective, aligned with the objectives of World Water Day, which is celebrated on 22 March.

As an example, VIAQUA participates in the WATERUN project, which aims to sustainably manage the rainwater runoffs of Santiago de Compostela. In the frame of this project, two pilot units will be constructed to treat water runoffs, one with a sustainable urban drainage system located in Vial de Ptolomeo (Tambre Industrial Park) and the other in the A Sionlla industrial park, which will include a sustainable urban drainage system and a wetland.

A fundamental pillar of the WATERUN Project is the co-creation process with the key actors of urban runoff water management in Santiago de Compostela. This project aims to develop methodologies and systems for monitoring, analysis and mitigation of diffuse pollution risks in collaboration with key local institutions, such as the City Council of Santiago, Aguas de Galicia, Sergas and architectural consultancies, which will make use of these tools once the  WATERUN project finish.

The space for interaction between the members of the WATERUN consortium and the key local actors will be the Local Advisory Committee, formed by representatives of the City Council of Santiago de Compostela, Augas de Galicia, Sergas, the company E3A Arquitectos and Viaqua for now. This committee will meet periodically to organise co-creation spaces to obtain feedback, ideas, suggestions and experiences from authorities, managers and water operators in the region, ensuring the provision of useful and practical tools that contribute to the sustainable management of runoff water in the Galician territory.
